How tablet presses work

Tablet presses represent a fundamental category among process machines, enabling prepared powders to be transformed into finished products ready for packaging.... The operation is relatively simple but requires high precision: the desired quantity of powder is introduced into a die positioned between two punches. The powder is then compressed twice, through a pre-compression phase followed by the main compression, applying high force to bind the powder together and form the tablet with the desired characteristics.

Tablet forming process

Once formed, the tablet is ejected from the machine and is ready for integrity inspection or for packaging in blisters, bottles, or other containers. Tablet thickness is adjusted by positioning the punches according to a graduated scale, allowing products to be obtained with precise dimensional specifications that comply with the required standards.

Types of tablet presses

Tablet presses can be of two main types: rotary or single-station. This distinction is based on the punch movement mechanism and the compression method. In addition, tablet presses are classified according to the level of automation:
  • Benchtop tablet presses: ideal for small-scale production, research and development laboratories, or pilot production
  • Semi-automatic tablet presses: suitable for medium-scale production with partial operator intervention
  • Automatic tablet presses: designed for large-scale production with high output capacity and minimal human intervention
