Bed type milling machines are particularly suitable for machining medium to large-sized workpieces. The Bed type milling machines have a very strong structure and allow to carry out removals of... a certain size. The main feature of this type of milling machine is the table that in these machines moves only longitudinally along the x axis while it is fixed along the transverse y axis. The movements in y and z, on the other hand, are generated by the head on which the cutter tool is mounted. This characteristic makes Bed type milling machines particularly suitable for machining particularly heavy workpieces. In the most modern and sophisticated versions, the Bed type milling machines are equipped with automatic tool changer, chip conveyor and 4 and 5 axes to allow more simultaneous machining. The various types of Bed type milling machines differ essentially according to the strokes in x, y and z and according to the type of head that can be mounted. As it happens also for the milling machines with travelling column, the head can be automatic or manual. In the case of an automatic head it can be automatically oriented both vertically and horizontally and therefore in this case we will talk about an automatic universal head. If the head is manual, it can also be manually oriented horizontally and/or vertically and in this case we will talk about a bi-directional manual head, but if the head cannot be oriented then it will be necessary to have two different heads for horizontal and vertical machining. Normally this type of milling machines are suitable for substantial removal and therefore are equipped with a spindle with cone BT40 or better BT50 gaining so much in robustness whilst loosing the speed of execution.
