Milling is a mechanical process that involves the removal of material from a piece of metal with the aid of a
cutting tool with rotary motion in order to obtain... the desired shape. The workpiece is fixed on the work table by the use of special clamping devices called clamps. Milling machines are distinguished
first of all between numerically controlled milling machines and traditional milling machines. In addition, the milling machines differ according to the dimensions, structural configuration, spindle
orientation, strokes and the type of possible machining operations that can be carried out, not the last, differ according to the installed options. Basically, there are three main categories of
milling machines and this classification includes vertical milling machines, travelling column milling machines and bed type milling machines. Vertical milling machines, are essentially small machines
often used for small occasional jobs in the workshop. Bed type and travelling column milling machines, on the other hand, can be of medium and even large dimensions and are used for machining from
medium to very large workpieces. These machines in their standard configuration are always equipped with a table and a column on which the milling head is housed. Then there are many options that
can be installed on this type of machinery, starting from the automatic tool magazine, a universal automatic head able to work both in horizontal and vertical position, an additional 4 axis such as
a rotary or indexed table. The main difference between bed type and travelling column milling machine is the x-axis stroke. In bed type configuration the longitudinal movement is carried out by the
table, whereas in the travelling column version all axes of movement are on the upright column.
