Surface or plane grinding machine is a type of grinding machine for machining flat surfaces. When working with surface grinding, the workpiece has no rotary motion but only moves along... the axis of the machine table. Moving along the plane, the surface of the workpiece comes into contact with the grinding wheel that carries out the actual grinding operation. There are two different types of machining with surface grinding depending on the positioning of the workpiece and the grinding spindle. The first, the most common, is surface grinding where the grinding wheel is positioned parallel to the plane. The second is the frontal surface grinding, in this second case the grinding wheel is positioned perpendicular to the plane so as to allow a frontal grinding of the workpiece. The modern surface grinding machines are also equipped with numerical controls that allow not only the memorisation of the work programmes but also the complete automation of the entire grinding cycle.
