The two deep drilling methods

Deep drilling operations performed by specialized deep drilling machines can be carried out using two distinct methods, each with specific characteristics and applications.

Gun drill method

The first method used by deep drilling machines is called "gun drilling." This system uses gun drills with internal full-oil lubrication. The chips produced during drilling and the oil used are expelled through the outer flute of the tool, ensuring effective removal of the material.

BTA/STS tool method

The second method is called "deep drilling with BTA/STS tools." In this configuration, both the oil and the chips produced during drilling flow in the opposite direction compared to the gun drill method. Oil is supplied externally to the cutting tool via feed tubes. This method is limited to materials with good chip formation and sufficiently large diameters.
